Do you need an apostille on a Travel Consent Letter?
When one or both parents are not able to travel with their minor child, a travel consent letter will need to be prepared, signed, notarized, and certified by an apostille from the State office.
For example, if you live in California and your child is traveling to Mexico with his/her grandparents, both parents need to sign and notarize the travel consent letter prior to receiving the California apostille.
A travel consent letter is required from the airline and most countries will also request this letter to be certified by an apostille in order to prove that the official (notary public) did in fact meet with the signer(s) of the document. The parent who is not traveling with the minor child will need to sign the travel consent letter and have it notarized. If both parents are not traveling with the minor child (Example: child traveling with Grandparents), then both of their signatures will need to be signed and notarized.
Examples of a travel consent letter can be found online or the airline can provide you a sample to complete. We recommend that you take this letter to a local notary who will acknowledge the signature of the signer(s). Please, be sure that you find a notary with a minimum of five years of experience notarizing documents in order to avoid any errors or delays. Unfortunately, we cannot tell you what information should be printed on the travel consent letter but there are plenty of samples online.
We can apostille a travel consent letter signed and notarized in any U.S. State, U.S. Embassy, or U.S. Consulate office. If you are in the USA, you can find a local notary at the local bank, UPS store, and stores that deal with shipping packages. You can also hire a traveling notary to meet you at the office or home. If you are outside of the USA, you can find the closest U.S. Federal Notary at a U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate office for assistance.
Once we receive your notarized document, we can process it with the State office as fast as the same business day. For example, a travel consent letter signed and notarized in the State of California can be processed through our Los Angeles office the same-day. Please, call us so we can email you the instructions, cost, and order forms.
